The Barbados Museum and Historical Society, located in the Historic Garrison Area, is housed in a nineteenth century building that was the Military Prison of the British Garrison. One of the original cells remains intact and although very small and certainly well fortified, it opens on to a beautiful courtyard with trees - a very congenial environment for a prisoner. The small but lovingly tended museum has 7 galleries covering the natural, social, military and decorative history of Barbados and collections of African artifacts, beautiful and very old prints and paintings. There are events such as special exhibits, art exhibitions, lectures, parties, graduations and concerts held throughout the year. Additionally, the Museum host dance and theatre shows, live bands, film and movie nights in its newly created outdoor Walled Garden Theatre. Check our calendar of events for details. On the first Saturday of June annually to start off the Crop Over season, the Museum hosts Crop Over Craft Works, which features 100% Barbadian food, arts and crafts. The museum is open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm and Sun 2-6pm. Closed on public holidays.
